In the early 19th century, the name cup cake took it's name from being baked in a individual pottery cup. In Queen Victoria's afternoon Tea's they were called fairy and butterfly cakes. This one is the modern butterfly cake.

This is what I call cupcake anytime.

You are making me hungry Patsy. I almost always make cupcakes instead of a layer cake. My favorite is yellow cake with lemon icing!
Patsy girl now you are just making me hungry. LOL! Yummy. Chocolate! Vanilla! Oh what the heck I love all sweets. ;-)
Patsy, cupcakes are one of my favorite treats! I never knew they used to be called 'fairycakes'. They look yummy...=)
Now my mouth is watering...
Patsy,
I have noticed in some of my English mystery books the term fairy cakes at tea and always wondered what they were....now I know. Cupcakes are great and so popular now. Enjoy the warmer weater.
