Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer, was created in 1939, in Chicago, for the Montgomery Ward department stores for a Christmas promotion. The lyrics were written as a poem by Robert Mays, but weren't set to music until 1947. Gene Autry recorded the hit song in 1949.

Wow, Rudolph is almost as old as I, but he doesn't show his age like I do. :-) Thanks for the trivia on Rudolph. My kids used to love the song, as did I.

Winifred, you have to have "been there" to really appreciate Gene Autry singing in the saddle. My earliest memories in the fifties is going to the Saturday afternoon movies which was usually a shoot them up cowboy film or Ma and Pa Kettle movies. I loved to go the movies and would buy a Sugar Daddy on a stick to suck on during the movie. Oh the happy memories.

Thanks for the info on good ole Rudolph. Just this evening as Elbert and I walked about the yard we were looking at our white lighted reindeer that moves his head from side to side and our son said, 'I think I will change the light in his nose to a red one. Make him Rudolph'. That would be just like him so look out, you may see a white Rudolph on my blog soon.
I remember Gene's recording of Rudolph, and it was my favorite.
